vitamin C – ascorbic acid, used to prevent scurvy, primary function is the manufacture of collagen, an important water-soluble antioxidant, critical for immune function, involved in the synthesis of certain nerve transmitting substances and hormones, and the absorption and utilization of some nutritional factors. Very susceptible to break down when exposed to air.

vitamin C ester – Ascorbyl Palmitate; an esterified version of vitamin C which makes it less susceptible to break down when exposed to the air thus retaining its efficacy much longer. It is both water-soluble and fat-soluble and therefore absorbs into all layers of the cells of the body very quickly. In skin it acts as both a antioxidant and can also help to increase the skin’s production of collagen. Ester C is not the same, it is usually L-Ascorbic Acid and is only water soluble and less stable.
