Skin Care Related Terms that begin with the letter E

elastin – a major fibrous mucoprotein of skin, lungs and blood vessels providing these tissues with resilient, elastic characteristics. It is the major connective tissue found in elastic structures such as blood vessels.

epidermis – the outermost (external) layer of the skin. The principle cell of the epidermis is the keratinocyte. The epidermis is subdivided into 5 layers; stratum germinativum, stratum spinosum, stratum granulosum, stratum lucidum, and stratum corneum (outermost layer).

exfoliate – to shed in flakes: to remove in flakes.

exfoliation – detachment and shedding of superficial cells of an epithelium or from any tissue surface, please see Exfoliant
